Oldies Night at the Library

Always the first Friday of the month......

A Tribute to Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary

October 2, 2009
7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Albee Room at the City Library

The Kingston Trio was the first folk group to break through as a big top 40 radio act, scoring a number one hit with "Tom Dooley" in 1958 and 16 more Hot 100 hits through 1963.  They also enjoyed 23 entries on the Top LP chart in the '50s and '60s.

In 1962 another folk trio emerged, with their first hit single, "Lemon Tree".  Peter, Paul & Mary had perhaps a bigger and longer-lasting impact on popular music than the Kingstons, bringing the songs of Bob Dylan to a wider audience.  Their hits included such memorable songs as "If I Had a Hammer." "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," and "Leaving on a Jet Plane".  In addition to 19 Hot 100 singles, they placed 13 LPs on the Top Pop Albums chart during the '60s.

Mary Travers, the pretty one sandwiched between Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey, passed away September 16.

On October 2 Oldies Night @ The Library will look back at the recordings of Peter, Paul & Mary, along with other folk and folk-rock music of the 1960s.  From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. the hits will keep on comin' in the Albee Room of the Milton-Freewater Public Library, 8 Southwest Eighth Avenue.

Admission is free and there's no extra charge for smiling.
