The Milton-Freewater Fire Department consists of 21 volunteers and Chief Shane Garner.  The Department has two fire stations that house a total of six firefighting apparatus.   The Fire Department has maintained an Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of Class 3 since November of 2016.

The City of Milton-Freewater has lifted the burn ban within city limits. Effective October 10, 2023 . Open burning of yard debris will be allowed on designated burn days. All fires must be out by dusk. Burn permits will be issued from the Milton-Freewater Dispatch Center and can be obtained by calling 541-938-5511.

Follow these steps for safe open burning:

  • Obtain a burn permit by calling the City of Milton-Freewater Dispatch Center @ 541-938-5511
  • Build the burn pile in a safe location - someplace where the flames won't damage adjacent vegetation or structures.
  • Never burn more than 1 cubic yard of material at once.
  • If you have more than 1 cubic yard of material to burn, separate it into smaller piles.
  • Burn only woody debris, and not garbage or other material.

  • Check the weather, and don't burn if extremely hot or windy conditions are predicted.
  • Have water and fire-fighting tools on-site.
  • Never leave the fire unattended or smoldering.
  • Finish before dark.
  • Drown and stir the burnt material to ensure it is completely out.
  • Check the burned area the next day.
  • If your fire becomes out of control, call 9-1-1 immediately.
