City Council Meeting Highlights

July 12, 2010

1.  Councilor Irving, on behalf of the entire council, presented Tim Smock with the July 2010 Employee of the Month Award.  Tim has worked for the city since September 2000.  He’s currently the Sanitation Truck Driver.  Tim was not only nominated by his co-workers but he was also nominated by a citizen.  The citizen was   Nancy Doherty who felt he went above and beyond his job description.  She shared her story from last winter during some very icy weather conditions.  Nancy managed to get her garbage can out just in time, but returning to her home, she slipped and fell, sliding underneath the sanitation truck.  Tim noticed Nancy walk towards the truck but didn’t notice her go beyond.  He got out of his truck and called her name only to discover she had slid underneath the truck.  He pulled Nancy out from underneath the truck and then walked her up to her home to see she made it safely.  Nancy said,  “Tim’s a true hero!”  She believes had Tim moved the truck, she would have been    crushed.  Tim is truly deserving of this award, congratulations!

2.   Council authorized the purchase of a used landfill CAT 963B Track Loader from  Portland Tractor, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $28,375.  This will replace the current loader being used that is in need of some very expensive repairs.   The cost of  the repairs exceeded the amount of the authorized purchase.  The authorized purchase price also includes delivery.

3.  Council awarded a bid in the amount of $57,000 to ElectSolve Technology Solutions and Services, Inc. for the integration of a Meter Data Management System (MDM).  This is another tool needed for the Smart Grid project.  The implementation of the system will provide the link needed between the billing software, Caselle, and the            Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) software.  There is a monthly charge after the first year of implementation for upgrades and software programming of approximately $1,575 per month.  The cost of the implementation and for the monthly support fees is included in the 50% cost share of the Smart Grid grant.  Milton-Freewater was one of eleven utilities chosen to receive this grant.

4.  A resolution was unanimously adopted declaring 65 electric transformers as being surplus equipment.  These transformers will either be sold or scrapped.

5.  Citizen, Merle Sherman complimented Dave Bradshaw, Craig Rouse and his crew for how nice the parks, golf course and city facilities look.  It’s not often that citizens come forward to express their appreciation and acknowledge the hard work of city staff.  Thank you for all your hard work it truly shows.

All Council members were present except Councilors Lyon and Humbert.
